4.09 million mobile subscribers in Belarus

According to Belarusian news agency, E-Belarus.org, the number of mobile subscribers in the country stood at 4.09 million at the end of 2005, a penetration rate of 45%, up from 25% at the beginning of the year. MTS saw its subscriber base grow by 74% to 2.11 million, while Velcom increased its base by 66% to 1.89 million. Belcel added 12,000 subscribers to take its total to 97,000 while newcomer BeST has not released any subscriber figures, having only launched operations on 21 December, although it is thought to have signed up around 1,000 subscribers. MTS' network currently covers 57% of the country's territory and 90% of the population, while Velcom's covers 63% and 99% respectively. According to the country's Minister of Communications and Information, Ivan Rak, the market is fast approaching saturation, with overall growth having slowed to 70% from 120% in 2004.
