Belarus, Russia to Enhance Gas Trade

Minsk, Jan 11 (Prensa Latina) Gas companies Beltransgaz (Belarus) and Gazprom (Russia) are considering potential increment of gas supplies to Europe.

The issue was the main topic at the talks between Belarus President Alexander Lukachenko and Gazprom Vice President and Gazexport General Director Alexander Medvedev.

Lukachenko and Medvedev termed potential for bilateral cooperation positive since the Russian company exports 40 percent of its output to the European Union.

Interfax news agency says the agenda also included new fuel prices and investments and setting up a work group to study near future projects.

Among these are building underground natural gas storage in Belarus and enhancing the pumping capacity toward Europe up to one billion cubic meters.

Lukachenko spoke on future bilateral arrangements in the sector on Dec 15 with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

Putin thinks a new price system would truly lead to the liberalization of trade and economic relations between Moscow and Minsk with temporary effects so as not to affect exchange.

The December contract establishes that Gazprom will supply Minsk 21 billon cubic meters in 2006 at 46.7 dollars per 1,000 cubic meters.
