Belarus: Countries Excluded From Election

The Belarusian central election commission has invited representatives from all countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to observe the March 19 presidential elections except for observers from Georgia, said the head of the commission Lidiya Yermoshina Jan. 19. Yermoshina added that Latvia and Lithuania were also not invited. Internet-based opposition group Charter 97 said the countries were excluded because of their frequent criticism of Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko.
