Belarus' BelCel plans to up capacity to 260,000 numbers this year

MINSK, Jan 19 (Prime-Tass) -- Belarusian mobile telecommunications operator BelCel plans to increase this year the capacity of its network to 260,000 numbers from about 120,000 numbers as of now, an official with the company told Prime-Tass Thursday.

It also plans to cover 59% of the territory of Belarus by late 2006, up from 41.4% as of now, the official said.

After modernization, BelCel's services will be available to 75% of Belarus' population, up from 60.6% as of now. BelCel plans to launch 90 base stations in 2006. The network currently operates 119 base stations.

BelCel, founded in 1993 operates in NMT-450 and IMT-MC-450 standards under the Diallog trade mark. Netherlands' CIB BV holds 50% in the company, while Belarusian state company Beltelecom holds the other 50%. As of January 1, 2006 BelCel's subscriber base was at about 100,000 users, and its market share in Belarus was at least 3%.

Other mobile operators in Belarus, in addition to BelCel, include three GSM operators, Mobile Digital Communications, Belarusian-Russian joint venture Mobile TeleSystems, or MTS Belarus, and state-controlled Belarus Telecommunications Network, or BeST.
