MosNews

According to Russian President Vladimir Putin an agreement to settle an energy dispute between Russia and Belarus was a good compromise which represents a subsidy of $5.8 billion for Minsk in 2007, Reuters news agency reported Monday.

Russia's direct or indirect support for the Belarussian economy "will continue for a long time," Putin said on Monday, adding, however, that "starting from this year, it will be sizably reduced".

Russia's support in 2007, which would help Belarus's transition towards a market economy, amounted to $3.3 billion in the gas sector and $2.5 billion in oil and oil products.
