Belarus's military contacts with Iran comply with int'l law -- DM

MINSK, January 24 (Itar-Tass) -- Belarus maintains military contacts with Iran in strict compliance with the norms of international law, the Defence Ministry said on Wednesday.

Belarusian Defence Minister, Colonel-General Leonid Maltsev has just returned from Iran after a January 21-22 visit.

"The development of bilateral contacts with Iran in the military field is carried out by the Belarusian side on the basis of national interests in strict conformity with effective norms of international law, including within the framework of the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1737 of December 23, 2006," the ministry said.

"During the visit, Maltsev met with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and had talks with the head of the Iranian Defence Ministry, Major-General Mostafa Mohammad-Najar. Topical issues of international security and prospects for the development of bilateral cooperation were discussed with the Iranian side," the ministry said.
