Belarus has technical capabilities to transit Ukrainian electric energy

Belarus possesses the technical capabilities to provide the transit of the Ukrainian electric energy via its territory, Belenergo told BelTA commenting on the intention of the Ukrainian side to export the electric energy through our country.

Belarus and Ukraine are connected by two power transmission lines which voltage is 330 kV - Chernigov-Gomel and Chernobyl nuclear power plant- Mozyr. They are in a good technical condition but are not operated at the moment. Belenergo is interested in putting them into operation and is ready to offer its capacities for the transit. The Ukrainian electric energy might be purchased by the Baltic states. "If Ukraine strikes a deal with Lithuania and Latvia to sell them electric energy, the energy might be supplied through our power transmission lines. We have five lines connecting us with the Baltic states," Belenergo said.

Ukraine's intention to transit electric power via the Belarusian territory was announced during the working meeting between First Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Vladimir Semashko and First Vice Premier of Ukraine Alexander Turchinov in Gomel on January 15.

After the negotiations Alexander Turchinov told reporters that the sides have reached the common ground; Belarus and Ukraine will sign the relevant memorandum in the near future. Apart from that Alexander Turchinov said that Ukraine will resume electric energy supplies to Belarus.

A reminder, in 2005, the interstate power transmission lines Chernigov-Gomel and Chernobyl nuclear power plant- Mozyr were restored and prepared for the supply of the Ukrainian electric energy to Belarus. In 2006, Belarus imported 2.5 billion kilowatt-hour of electric energy from Ukraine, in H1 2007 about 800 million kilowatt-hour. However, beginning H2 2007, Belarus has not imported the Ukrainian electric power as the sides did not agree about the price.

The capacity of the Belarusian energy system is more than 7,800 megawatt. In 2009, Belarus will import up to 5 billion kilowatt-hour of electric energy from Russia.
