Belarus wants Yamal-Europe 2 gas pipeline

Belarus is to consult Poland and Germany on a plan to lay new pipelines to western Europe in order to secure gas supplies from Russia.

The Interfax agency reports that a senior source from the Belarusian at the emergency talks between Russia and Ukraine to solve the latest gas dispute, Saturday, said that Minsk believes the building of a Yamal-Europe 2 gas pipeline, carrying supply from eastern Siberia to the west and bypassing Ukraine, which may or may not be a reliable transit partner.

Poland already gets the majority of its Russian gas supply via Belarus.

Warsaw would welcome consultation as it is a major part of the criticism of the planned Nord Steam pipeline - carrying gas from Russia to western Europe and bypassing Poland - which was agreed between Moscow and Berlin without Poland being part of the talks.

Another agreement was reached in Moscow between Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko to resume normal gas supplies to Europe - parts of which, particularly in the east - have been denied access to Gazprom's product since Ukraine turned off the transit taps two weeks ago. Brussels has welcomed the agreement but warns that "false dawns" have been seen coming from talks between Russia and Ukraine before on this issue.
