Ukrainian president pledges to deepen relations with Belarus

KIEV, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko on Tuesday hailed his country's relationship with Belarus, pledging to deepen bilateral ties.

"The economic and trade relations between Ukraine and Belarus have developed smoothly, with bilateral trade volume reaching billion dollars in 2008, a surge of 70 percent from the previous year ...," Yushchenko said during a meeting in Chernigov, a northeastern city of Ukraine, with his visiting Belarussian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko.

Yushchenko said the two countries have great potential room in developing economic and trade cooperation

For his part, Lukashenko said that Belarus and Ukraine are making efforts to develop regional cooperation, stressing that the two sides should strengthen further cooperation to weather the global financial crisis.

After the meeting, representatives of two states signed a series of agreements to strengthen further cooperation in areas such as economy, trade, energy, transportation and consular relations.
