Protests In Belarus Over Construction At Former Concentration Camp

VITEBSK, Belarus -- Activists in the Belarusian city of Vitebsk are protesting the construction of apartments on the site of a former Nazi concentration camp.

More than 120,000 people reportedly died at the camp in Vitebsk during the Nazi occupation in the 1940s.

Former camp inmate Uladzimir Ryzo told RFE/RL's Belarus Service that in the 1990s city authorities planned to put a memorial on the site, but financial problems led to it not being implemented.

Ryzo says garages and foundations for apartment blocks have now been built on the site.

Activists are trying to collect signatures to stop the construction and honor the memory of those who died there by preserving the site.
