Belarus oil threat

Belarus may face a cutoff of oil supplies from Transneft this week if a damaging dispute is not settled, energy analysts said.

Russia's pipeline monopoly may halt supplies to Belarus as the two countries have failed to reach a new supply agreement, according to a Transneft spokesman, Bloomberg reported.

The Russian state budget could be the big winner from the dispute, as Russian oil firms would have to pay export taxes of up to $2 billion under new rules, but they would likely pass on the extra costs to Belarus and other customers, Bloomberg quoted Igor Kurinny, an oil analyst at ING, as saying.

As of Monday, supplies of oil through Belarus to Central and Eastern Europe remained unaffected by the dispute.
