Warsaw strongly concerned with Minsk persecution

Poland's FM has talked with the head of Belarusian diplomacy on the latest police actions against members of the Polish minority.

Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has held a phone conference with the head of Belarusian diplomacy Sergei Martynov on the detention of several dozen members of the Association of Poles in Belarus by the regime's security services.

The group of opposition members of the organization, not recognized by the Lukashenko authorities, had been on their way to the Polish House in Ivenec, to defend it against a takeover by a part of the Association supported by the central authorities in Minsk.

Deputy Foreign Minister Jan Borkowski told Polish Radio that such actions do not serve Poland's relations with Belarus: "Though minister Martynov created the impression this was not the intention of Minsk authorities, minister Sikorski pointed out it is hard to imagine the local police to undertake on its own such actions against the Poles on their way to Ivenec."

Borkowski said his ministry is in constant communication with members of the Association of Poles in Belarus and is monitoring their situation. He added that the Association's chairwoman Angelika Borys has repeatedly been stopped by the police following the incident.
