Turkmenistan's students make bulk of foreign students in Belarusian universities

The Belarusian higher education establishments account for more than 2,800 thousand students from Turkmenistan in the current academic year. This is more than any other country, including Russia and China, Belorussian Education Minister Alexander Radkov reported at a meeting in Minsk with Minister of Education of Turkmenistan Gulshat Mammadova. According to BELTA news agency, Belarus will soon expand the roster of specialties for students.

"Students from Turkmenistan come mainly for economic or legal professions, and we would like to expand the roster to technical, engineering, agricultural and medical professions," Alexander Radkov said.

He also said that in the 2009-2010 academic year there was launched a joint long-term project on training Turkmen staff involved in the implementation of the project on construction and operation of the Garlyk mining and processing complex, which is being built in Turkmenistan by "Belgorkhimprom." In this regard, 60 students were admitted by the BSTU to the faculty of chemical technology and engineering in the fall of 2009, and 59 students - by BNTU to the faculty of mining and environmental engineering.

The education ministries of the two countries drafted an Intergovernmental Agreement on the mutual recognition of education certificates, scientific degrees and titles, which is to be signed within the framework of the forthcoming official visit of Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to Belarus.

As Alexander Radkov stressed, "the agreement will simplify the mechanism of recognition by Turkmenistan of diplomas obtained by Turkmen staff in Belarus, and make them competitive in the domestic labor market." In addition, there will be signed contracts between BNTU and Turkmen Polytechnic University, Belarusian State Agricultural Academy and the Turkmen Agricultural University named after SA Niyazov.
