Highest 2009 inflation registered in Ukraine, Belarus, Russia

Russia's inflation in 2009 was the third highest in Europe, lower only than that in Ukraine and Belarus, according to the Russian Federal State Statistics Service's (Rosstat) report on the increase in consumer prices based on publications by Eurostat. Inflation amounted to 8.8 percent in Russia, 10.1 percent in Belarus and 12.3 percent in Ukraine in 2009. Conversely, average inflation in Europe stood at 1.4 percent.

In December alone, consumer prices went up the most in Belarus (1.3 percent) and Ukraine (0.9 percent), while the most significant decrease (0.7 percent) was registered in the Netherlands.

In Russia, the prices for products and services edged up 0.4 percent compared to November, while food prices inched up 0.6 percent. Since the beginning of the year, food prices rose 4.9 percent (while falling 1 percent in the EU).
