Dutch support for Belarus opposition

Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal promised the Belarus opposition Dutch support at a meeting in The Hague on Tuesday, although he will consult the European Union first about the nature of that support.

He reiterated his view that Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko and his senior officials should be barred from entering the EU and spoke in favour of freezing the regime's assets.

The Belarus opposition leaders, who are calling for far-reaching economic sanctions, were disappointed. The daughter of jailed presidential candidate Vladimir Neklyayev commented: "The situation in Belarus is getting worse all the time. The list of political prisoners is getting longer, homes are being raided and journalists are being harassed."
