Belarus steel product consumption to rise to 2 million tonnes in 2010

It is reported that in 2010 Belarus is expected to increase its steel product consumption by 15%YoY to 2.2 million tonnes mainly due to the growth of demand from the key steel consuming sectors such as tractor and agricultural machine building.

Generally, Belarus exports about 2 million tonnes of steel products each year, while its annual steel product imports usually amount to around 2.5 million tonnes to 3 million tonnes.

As per report, in the first nine months of 2010, Belarus exported 1.313 million tonnes of steel products down by 10.5%YoY while it imported 2.6 million tonnes of steel products up by 36%YoY. The country steel pipe exports went up by 30%YoY to 239,000 tonnes.

Belarus exports mainly long steel products and imports flats and longs and pipes. Accordingly, with its imports from Russia, Belarus meets 55% of its needs in finished steel products and 80% of its needs in steel pipes. In particular, in January to September 2010, Belarus imports of steel products from Russia rose by 32%YoY to 2.11 million tonnes ie 81% of total imports, while its imports of pipes amounted to 164,000 tonnes ie 70% of its total pipe imports.
