Ha NOi - Ties between Viet Nam and Belarus were in the spotlight yesterday when President Tran Duc Luong met with the Belarusian President's special envoy and Vladimir Nikolaevich Konophev.

The envoy, who is also chairman of the Belarusian House of Representative, came to Viet Nam yesterday for a three-day visit.

At the meeting, Luong said Viet Nam always attached great importance to friendship and co-operation with Belarus.

Luong stressed that although Viet Nam and Belarus had fulfilled their mutual co-operative goals, there were still much potential for further expanding relations between the two countries. This potential was particularly apparent in the area of developing and manufacturing large-capacity machines and vehicles - a key Belarusian industry.

Nikolaevich said Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko would visit Viet Nam after the presidential elections in mid-March.

The visit of the Belarusian president later this year would provide an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss new directions for promoting their bilateral relationship.

President Luong said he wished Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko would receive the continued confidence of his people at the coming election.

On the same day Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien also held discussions with the Belarusian envoy. - VNS
