Belarus favors political solution to situation around Kosovo

MINSK. Feb 18 (Interfax) - Belarus holds that the situation around Kosovo should be solved within the framework of international law and on the basis of UN Security Council decisions, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said in a statement circulated on Monday.

"The settlement of the dispute on the status of Kosovo and Metochia should be based on UN Security Council resolution 1244 (1999) that confirms the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia as well as on key clauses of the UN Charter and the Helsinki Final Act. The UN Security Council responsibility for international peace and security should play the leading part in this process," the statement says.

"The only way of defusing tension and achieving stability in the region is a political settlement stipulating the resumption of talks between Belgrade and Pristina," it says.

"Belarus hopes for a mutually acceptable solution on the status of Kosovo and Metochia in line with universal norms and principles of international law," the ministry said.
