Pope to deliver sermon during teleconference between Minsk, Vatican

Minsk, February 6, Interfax - A televised conference between the Vatican and Minsk, in which Pope Benedict XVI is to take part, should be held on March 1.

Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz, the Roman Catholic archbishop of Minsk and Mogilyov, said on Wednesday that "the pope will deliver his sermon; the prayer will start at 6:00 p.m. and will end at about 8:00 p.m. Minsk time."

"This prayer is important to Belarusian Catholics, especially students, because they will be praying together with the pope and their peers," Kondrusiewicz said during an online conference at the Belarusian TV and Radio Company website.

The prayer is "also important for our homeland, as it is for the first time in history that something of the sort is to happen, and more people in the world will know about Belarus and the Catholic Church in it and also about the Orthodox Church, because general information will be reported worldwide," said Kondrusiewicz, who was born in Belarus.

The Catholic religion in Belarus has been developing successfully recently, Kondrusiewicz said. "The Church in Belarus has been developing very rapidly over the past 16 years. We need to seek perfection and respond to challenges of the time. This is what I will be doing together with priests, monks, nuns, and all believers," he said.
