SOssetia's recognition doesn't depend on Russian credit-Lukashenko

MINSK, February 6 (Itar-Tass) -- Belarus will solve the problem of the recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia independently, and this is by no means linked to Russian credits to Belarus, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko declared in an interview to Euronews television.

"We will tolerate no pressure either from Europe or Russia. I said earlier that Belarus had even closer relations with Abkhazia than Russia did. We shall resolve this problem calmly and in an absolutely democratic way. It's our sovereign right to recognize or not recognize," Lukashenko stressed.

Belarusian parliamentarians "will discuss this problem in the framework of our legislation, make their proposals, and we shall settle this problem," Lukashenko said.

"I think Belarus will act pragmatically, reasonably and decently as regards the peoples of Abkhazia and South Ossetia," he stressed.

Commenting on a credit Belarus had asked from Russia, Lukashenko said that granting the credit would be a first step to make the Russian rouble "a real, fully fledged regional currency". "Last year we suggested at talks with Russia to make a first step together. Both of us - Belarusians and Russians, are prepared for the Russian rouble to make first steps on the way to turning into a real, fully-fledged regional currency. Give us a credit so that for the beginning we could use this money to pay for energy resources supply," Lukashenko said.

At present, mutual accounts are made in dollars and euros. "Is it normal? Let us make payments on the basis of the Russian rouble, at least payments for natural gas and oil," Lukashenko said.
