Belarus, Ireland to agree on recuperation terms for Belarusian children

The President of Belarus has approved a draft intergovernmental agreement with Ireland on the conditions of recuperation of Belarusian children in Ireland as a basis for holding negotiations. Alexander Lukashenko signed the relevant decree on February 6, BelTA learnt from the president's press service.

Today recuperation programmes cover Belarusian children aged between seven and fourteen who can visit the same country not more than three times (for the states with which Belarus signed international agreements after October 1, 2008).

The Department of Foreign Affairs of Ireland has addressed Belarus with a request of ink the previously existing international agreement, i.e. on the recuperation of children aged seven to 18 without limiting the number of trips to the country.

Taking into account that Belarus maintains large-scale humanitarian cooperation with Ireland (in 2004-2007 Irish charities implemented $18 million worth of projects on the territory of Belarus, with more than 2,000 Belarusian children resting and recuperating in Ireland year-on-year), the Head of State took a decision in December 2008 to send children for recuperation to Ireland on the previous conditions. The relevant provisions have been included in the agreement that is to be signed with Ireland.

Alexander Kolyada, Director of the Department for Humanitarian Activity under the Property Management Directorate of the President of Belarus, from the Belarusian side and Justin Harman, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ireland to the Russian Federation, from the Irish side have been commissioned to sign the agreement.

The negotiations and signing of the agreement will take place in February 2009. The agreement is expected to be applied from the date of its signing before it officially takes affect. The agreement will enable nearly 2,000 Belarusian children to visit Ireland every year.
