Lithuanian, Belarus and Ukraine to sign Lithuania power supplies agreement

Vilnius - Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine plan to sign an agreement on electricity supplies to Lithuania through Belarus in May, according to the head of Lithuanian Foreign Ministry Vygaudas Usackas, who was speaking after meeting Ukrainian and Belarus Foreign Ministers Volodymyr Ohryzko and Sergey Martynov on Saturday.

"By the end of this year, the Ignalina nuclear power plant will be shut down, that is why Lithuania is interested in acquiring energy from other markets," Usackas said at a press conference.

Along with the foreign ministers, the Vilnius meeting was attended by representatives of the energy sector from Belarus and Ukraine.

The Belarusian foreign minister said at a press conference on Saturday that there are no technical obstacles to transferring energy from Ukraine to Lithuania.

In December 2009, Lithuania is obliged to close the Ignalina nuclear power plant, and thus talks are being held on power supplies from Ukraine starting from 2010. The transport route crosses the state border of Belarus.

The foreign ministers have also discussed the possibilities and prospects for the Viking cargo train project.
