Council of Europe lawmakers visit Belarus

Associated Press

MINSK, Belarus - Lawmakers from the Council of Europe say Belarusian authorities must give more say to the opposition if the ex-Soviet nation wants to reclaim its seat.

Belarus was evicted from the top European human rights body in 1997 over a referendum that stripped the national parliament of most of its powers.

Goran Lindblad of the council's Parliamentary Assembly says he and other lawmakers have talked to Belarusian officials about developing a dialogue between the opposition and the government.

Lindblad said Wednesday Belarus could be invited to rejoin the assembly if opposition representatives are included in its delegation.

Belarus' President Alexander Lukashenko has been dubbed "Europe's last dictator" by the U.S. and the EU for his crackdown on dissent.
