Drafted Belarusian Activist Hospitalized

A Belarusian youth activist who was forced into the army earlier this month has been hospitalized, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

Franak Vyachorka, a leader of the opposition Belarusian Popular Front, was hospitalized for high blood pressure on February 18.

He told RFE/RL that he has had problems with his blood pressure for years and for that reason was exempted from military service.

Despite that fact, he and several other youth activists were forcibly drafted into the army.

Activists say the decision to enlist Vyachorka and his colleagues was politically motivated.

Franak Vyachorka is the son of Vintsuk Vyachorka, the deputy head of the Popular Front.
