EU lawmakers call for lifting sanctions on Belarus

MINSK, Belarus (AP) - European lawmakers on a visit to Belarus say they will recommend lifting EU travel sanctions on Belarusian officials.

European parliament member Laima Andrikiene says she and other lawmakers believe the travel ban imposed in 2006 can be lifted. But Andrikiene told reporters Friday that Belarusian authorities need to take stronger steps toward democracy.

Belarus' President Alexander Lukashenko has been dubbed by the EU and the United States. But he has sought recently to improve ties with the West, releasing political prisoners and allowing opposition activists to run for parliament.

The European Union suspended the travel ban in October. Completely lifting the restrictions would require another decision.
