Deputy PM visits Belarus

Polish deputy prime minister and minister for the economy Waldemar Pawlak is paying a visit to Belarus. He has already held talks with Prime Minister Sergey Sidorski and his deputy Andrey Kobiakov. The agenda includes trade exchange, the participation of Polish companies in the privatisation of the Belarus fuels-and-energy and banking and insurance sectors as well as improved access to the Byelorussian agricultural market.

Minister Pawlak is accompanied on his trip by deputy ministers of economy, agriculture and finance. Speaking to Polish Radio Waldemar Pawlak also said that this country intends to support Belarus in its dialogue with the European Union. "This is part of both the Eastern Partnership project and the cooperation with the European Union. We can always ask a simple question: is it better if Belarus is closer to or farther away from Poland and the EU. I am convinced it would be much better if Belarus had better and closer relations both with Poland and the European Union".

Last year, Polish export to Belarus grew by 43 percent, to exceed 1.6 billion US dollars. Over the same period, Polish import increased by 15 percent and now stands at 1.3 billion dollars. This is the first visit of such a high ranking Polish politician in Belarus in six years.
