Russia ready to ensure mutual security with Belarus - pres

MOSCOW, February 3 (Itar-Tass) - Russia is ready to move forward towards ensuring mutual security with Belarus, President Dmitry Medvedev said at the talks with his Belarussian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko on Tuesday.

"We are determined to move forward towards ensuring mutual security, including that in air defence," he said. "We have several other serious intentions that I hope will be translated into reality," he said.

Medvedev also stressed that Russia and Belarus "have a strong groundwork for energy cooperation" - a gas agreement. This is an important component in relations taking into account "that gas row with Ukraine that emerged early this year."

The president reiterated that the meeting of the Supreme State Council of the Russia-Belarus union state was planned long beforehand.

"I want to stress that we observe progress in relations due to our responsible decisions and instructions to study several issues additionally. The decisions earlier discussed and coordinated will be adopted today," he said.
