Belarus-Russia relations as cooperation example for EurAsEC, CSTO, Russian president says

The higher level of Belarusian-Russian relations should serve as a good example of mutually beneficial partnership in all areas of cooperation in EurAsEC and the CSTO. The statement was made by President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev at a session of the Supreme State Council of the Union State in Moscow on January 3.

The Russian leader noted that a lot had been done recently to achieve an optimal economic balance and efforts aimed at reinforcing the economic basis of the Union State had continued.

He said, rapid formation of the common economic and customs space is among priority tasks. "We are ready to step up the work in the bilateral format and within the framework of the EurAsEC troika," said Dmitry Medvedev, reported Belta.

The session of the Supreme State Council is supposed to approve this year's budget, which is as large as RUB4.9 billion. The budget was increased this year, which will allow more effective implementation of Union programmes, Dmitry Medvedev believes.

Members of the Supreme State Council are expected to analyse the progress in fulfilling the Union State Social Development Concept, which runs till 2010. Apart from that, they will have to adopt a programme of coordinated foreign policy actions of the states parties to the Union State Foundation Treaty for 2008-2009. Dmitry Medvedev underscored that enhancement of foreign policy cooperation is one of the important priorities in the Union State.

In his opinion, the sides should work hard and adapt the accumulated experience to modern conditions. Only this approach can give new dynamics to the integration processes.
