Russia, Belarus sign common air defense agreement

MOSCOW, February 3 (Itar-Tass) -- An agreement on forming a common air defense system of Russia and Belarus was signed at a meeting of the Union State's Supreme State Council, Russian presidential aide Sergei Prikhodko said.

"This system will increase the defense ability of Russia and Belarus a lot," Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told the meeting. The common air defense system should be developed alongside Belarus-Russia military contacts, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko added.

Belarus will be the first echelon of the new network, Russian Air Force Commander Col. Gen. Alexander Zelin said. "Russia and Belarus will reciprocally reinforce their aviation and air defense forces," he said.

"The common air defense network of Russia and Belarus will upgrade radar control of the air space at low and super-low altitudes on the western boundary of the Union State from the Baltic countries to Ukraine," Zelin said.

"The network will engage five aviation units, ten air defense units, five radio-technical units and one electronic warfare unit," he noted.
