Mutual interest pushes Belarus, EU to normalization of relations - Lukashenko

MINSK. Feb 2 (Interfax) - Belarus-EU relations thawed because of mutual interests, said Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

"To speak about the thaw in our relations [with the European Union], frankly speaking there are positive elements," Lukashenko told the EuroNews TV channel in Minsk on Monday.

"We value this much and think that this is a landmark, the base on which we can develop our relations," the president said.

"There is mutual interest and this pushes us to normal relations," he said.

Lukashenko said that the EU is the second-largest trade partner for Belarus. The president also added that without Belarus, Europe would be unable to resolve such problems as drug trafficking, illegal migration, and transit of energy.

Belarus welcomes the EU's Eastern Partnership, the Belarusian leader added.

"We welcome this positive European move to our neighbors. This is a pragmatic, rational and timely move of the EU," he said.
