Lukashenko: Mutual interest pushes Belarus, European Union to normalization of relations

Interfax-Ukraine

Minsk, February 2 (Interfax) - Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has noted that Belarus-EU relations have thawed.

"To speak about the thaw in our relations [with the European Union], frankly speaking there are positive elements," Lukashenko told the EuroNews TV channel in Minsk on Monday.

"We value this much and think that this is a landmark, the base on which we can develop our relations," the president said.

"There is mutual interest and this pushes us to normal relations," he said.

Lukashenko pointed out that the EU is the second largest trade partner for Belarus. The president also added that without Belarus Europe would be unable to resolve such topical problems as drug trafficking, illegal migration and secure transit of energy.

Belarus welcomes the Eastern neighborhood policy. "We welcome this positive European move to our neighbors. This is a pragmatic, rational and timely move of the EU," he said.
