Belarus defends treatment of Polish ethnic group

Associated Press

Belarus' ambassador to Poland is defending his country's heavily criticized treatment of members of a banned ethnic Polish group.

Ambassador Victor Gaisenak said on TVN24 Wednesday that the Union of Poles doesn't respect the law and should seek a compromise with another Polish group that is recognized by his government.

Some 40 members of the union were detained last week for joining an illegal gathering while they were heading to a court hearing about a Polish cultural center. The group cultivates Polish traditions and promotes democracy.

Poland protested the arrests and urged EU sanctions against the authoritarian regime of President Alexander Lukashenko.

Gaisenak said Minsk wants to cooperate with Poland but not under pressure from threats.
