Belarus: Presidential Candidate Detained

Belarusian police detained presidential candidate Alexander Kozulin on March 2 after he attempted to register as a delegate to the All-Belarusian Assembly. Kozulin will be released and fined for participating in a fistfight, which began after he entered the building demanding to be registered as the candidate from the Social Democratic Party. Twenty of Kozulin's supporters demonstrating outside the building also were detained, Kozulin's press secretary said. The Belarusian president convenes the assembly every five years to outline social and economic prospects for the coming years. Assembly delegates are composed of representatives of public associations and labor unions.
