Minsk, Belarus (AHN) - Protesters in Belarus are receiving up to 15 days in jail for their opposition to the latest election.

Police stormed rallies in the capital, Minsk, where rioters came out to deny President Alexander Lukashenko a third five-year term, who won the election with 82.6 percent of the vote.

Both the European Union and the United States have opposed the election and the convictions, with leading opposition candidate, Alexander Milinkevich, calling the trials a "farce."

Milinkevich says, "This is a sheer farce, this is not a real trial."

He continues, "The sentences must have been pre-written... The judge was virtually ashamed to raise his eyes."

According to reports, the rallies in Minsk have drawn up to 10,000 people, despite harsh cold weather and power blackouts imposed by police.
