Belarusian oil spill floats toward Latvia

BNS

A diesel spill from a cracked Belarusian pipeline is expected to flow into the Daugava, Latvia's biggest river.

Belarus informed Latvia of the spill on the Ulla River on March 24, 17 hours after the spill occurred and the slick began its drift toward the downstream Daugava River.

Authorities will attempt to contain the pollution by placing oil spill booms on the river, but its potential impact remains unknown.

The Latvian State Fire and Rescue Service and the Environment Ministry's emergency management and coordination center said they were preparing for a worst case scenario.
