Quake: Cypher wins ESDC Cup in Belarus

By: Rod Breslau

Alexey "Cypher" Yushanevsky has defeated Igor "Hunter" Sambolskiy to win the ESDC Quake 4 Cup.

Belarussian gaming organization SnG together with clan SD held their first Quake 4 event this past weekend in Minsk, Belarus. 32 strong Eastern European players such as Ukraine's Igor "Hunter" Sambolskiy, Russia's Ryapolov "Cast" Konstantin and Belarus' own Alexey "Cypher" Yushanevsky participated in the ESDC Cup.

After storming through the groups and brackets, Sambolskiy and Yushanevsky would meet each other in the upper bracket finals. Yushanevsky took the series in three maps with close scores all around. Sambolskiy was sent to the consolation finals to face Konstantin and a chance for a rematch against Yushanevsky. With a nailbiting one point victory over Monsoon followed by a strong win on Placebo Effect, Sambolskiy had his chance against the young Belarusian once more.

The grand finals series saw a reverse of the upper bracket finals, as both players won their home maps. Yushanevsky came back from a 10:-1 on Placebo Effect to tie the game up before Sambolskiy was able to put it away. Once again the final map would come down to Galang, and Sambolskiy needed a win to send the series into a second set. Unfortunately it would not be his day, and Yushanevsky would once again double Sambolskiy's score to finish out the series and win a title in his home country
