US recalls embassy staff from Minsk

Washington - The United States is recalling part of its embassy staff from the Belarus capital Minsk. The measure is the result of a diplomatic row between the two countries.

Washington recently imposed economic sanctions on the Belarus state-owned oil company in an attempt to pressure the Belarus government into improving the human rights situation there. Minsk reacted by recalling its ambassador from Washington and demanded the departure of the US ambassador to Belarus.

Minsk made an additional demand that the remaining embassy staff be reduced following reports that US embassy staff were involved in espionage. The US has dismissed the allegations as nonsensical.
