Belarusian-U.S. ties can be fixed if economic sanctions lifted fromBelarus - official

MINSK. March 25 (Interfax) - The U.S. side should lift economic sanctions from Belarus, spokesman for the Belarusian Foreign Ministry Andrei Popov said.

"If the U.S. side really 'regrets' the consequences and really wants 'other relations' with our country, as an official representative of the [U.S.] Department of State said, it [the United States] should lift sanctions from Belarus. The lifting of sanctions is the key to unlock an exit from the situation," Popov told journalists on Tuesday, in comments on a statement by a spokesman for the U.S. State Department on Belarus.

"The official representative of the U.S. State Department deludes the international community and U.S. public, by trying to present the Belarusian side as responsible for the current situation in Belarusian- U.S. relations," the spokesman said.

"Such attempts can easily be viewed as the manifestation of moral and political weakness of the U.S. position towards Belarus. The U.S. is the only 'author' of the current situation," Popov said.
