Head of State Security Committee of Belarus confirmed information on revealed US espionage ring

AIA already reported that on March 23 the First National Television channel of Belarus showed a report claiming that the State Security Committee of Belarus had revealed an espionage ring created by the embassy of the United States of America under covering of struggle against terrorism. It was told that the recruited Belarus citizens had to gather and transfer information that was of interest to the US special services for use of the American Federal Bureau of Investigation doing a mischief to their country.

Uncharacteristically, the Belarusian KGB is providing only a minimum of information about the case. Firstly the State Security Committee of Belarus was quite reserved as regards the state television report and the chief of the KGB public relations centre, Valery Nadtochayev, said he had no comments on the matter. Now news agency Interfax cites Nadtochayev saying that he "can confirm only that the information : corresponds to reality."

Lastly the head of the State Security Committee of Belarus, Yury Zhadobin, shortly told the Interfax about some details of the operation. - Nobody is detained. We have been carrying out our functions, - Zhadobin is quoted by the news agency as saying. Zhadobin has not specified whether criminal cases will be brought against the persons mentioned in connection with the KGB operation.

Referring to Zhadobin, Interfax makes conclusion that actions of the Belarus secret service had preventive character. - The most important function is to prevent, to not admit fulfilment of a crime, therefore there is such a working method in the system of the State Security Committee as preventive maintenance. There is general and individual preventive maintenance and in this particular case we have been engaged in preventive work, - the news agency cites Zhadobin.
