US blasts Belarus recommendation US ambassador leave

WASHINGTON (Thomson Financial) - The United States condemned Belarus's "unjustified" push for the US ambassador there to leave the country and warned such a step further isolated the former Soviet state from Europe.

"We strongly regret this unjustified action by the Belarussian government. This is deeply disappointing and only takes them further away from Europe and the rest of the world," said White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe.

Belarus said earlier today it was recommending the US ambassador leave the country and also announced it was recalling its own envoy to Washington, Russia's Interfax state news agency reported.

The announcement by the former Soviet state's foreign ministry spokesman, Andrei Popov, followed sharp criticism by the United States of the authoritarian government's treatment of an imprisoned opposition leader.
