Belarus recalls ambassador to U.S.

MINSK, Belarus, March 8 (UPI) -- Belarus requested that its ambassador to the United States, Mikhail Khvostov, return from Washington to Belarus for consultations, the Foreign Ministry said.

The Belarusian government also urged the U.S. Ambassador in Minsk, Karen B. Stewart, to depart from Belarus for consultations, said Andrei Popov, the chief of the ministry's press service.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement the recall was made "in connection with the additional restrictive measures of economic nature that the (United States) introduced against enterprises affiliated with the petrochemical corporation Belneftekhim," Itar-Tass reported.

"The (United States) ignored earlier agreements, broke the previously coordinated pattern of normalizing relations and imposed additional economic restrictions on Belneftekhim affiliates," the statement said.

Belarus also called for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to make an immediate move toward ensuring U.S. compliance with international commitments, the report said.
