Belarus offers Venezuela assistance in creating defense system

09:21 GMT, March 17, 2010 MINSK | Belarus is ready to assist Venezuela in the creation of a modern national defense system, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said in Caracas on Tuesday, according to RIA Novosti.

"We have offered your president to share our experience of creating a strong defense system. If he desires to do this, we will be able to help you," Lukashenko told the Venezuelan parliament.

"And then you will be able to live and work peacefully without worrying about if the great powers will make friends with you or plot against you," he added.

He did not offer further details.

Lukashenko's visit to Venezuela has already seen a deal for the South American state to supply up to 80,000 barrels of crude oil per day to Belarus.

The Belarusian government press service earlier called "groundless" media speculation that Lukashenko had intentionally gone to visit to Venezuela to avoid meeting Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin currently in Belarus.

Traditionally strong ties between Russia and Belarus have deteriorated of late over Belarus's refusal to follow Russia in recognizing the former Georgian republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. (RIA Novosti)
