Chinese Leader Hails Parliamentary Exchanges with Belarus

Increased exchanges between the legislatures of China and Belarus are conducive to enhancing the understanding and friendship between the two peoples and consolidating the social foundation for good bilateral ties, visiting Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping said on Thursday.

Since their diplomatic ties were established 18 years ago, China and Belarus, as good friends and partners, have always supported each other and cooperated closely, said Xi, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, while meeting with speakers of the National Assembly, the Belarusian parliament.

Xi first conveyed greetings to the Belarusian parliament speakers from Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature.

On Sino-Belarusian relations, Xi said that the two countries have conducted successful cooperation on trade and economy, science and technology, military technology and culture, while people-to-people exchanges have also flourished.

Both sides share similar or same stances on a series of major international and regional affairs, and have maintained close connections and coordination, he added.

Xi noted that economic globalization has made different countries increasingly interrelated to each other, and has made it necessary for them to strengthen coordination and cooperation so as to jointly tackle various challenges.

China and Belarus enjoy a solid political foundation and a high degree of mutual trust, and both face the tough task to revitalize economy, improve people's livelihood and realize national prosperity, he said.

China, Xi said, is ready to work with Belarus to further reinforce bilateral political contact on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, to expand practical cooperation in various fields and to elevate bilateral ties to a new high.

Xi called on both sides to step up exchange between legislatures on various levels and make greater efforts to promote bilateral relations.

He also expressed hope that the Chinese and Belarusian legislatures can play a positive role in promoting exchange and cooperation between the local governments and enterprises of both countries.

In turn, Boris Batura, chairman of the Council of the Republic, or the upper house of the Belarusian parliament, pledged to work closely with the Chinese side, particularly the NPC, to implement the strategic consensus reached and a series of cooperation documents signed during Xi's visit, as well as to ensure the steady development of bilateral ties.

Vladimir Andreichenko, chairman of the House of Representatives, or the lower house, described China as Belarus' best friend and partner.

It's the unswerving policy of the Belarusian government and parliament to strengthen friendly cooperation with China, and both countries should continue to support each other on issues of core interests, he said.

The Belarusian parliament is willing to conduct all-round cooperation with China and help boost people-to-people interaction, said Andreichenko.

Belarus will be an active participant in the Shanghai World Expo so as to further enhance the mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples, he added.

Xi, who arrived in Helsinki later on Thursday, is on a 12-day, four-nation European tour that will also take him to Sweden.
