Belarus to work with China on US$10 bln worth of projects

Mar. 26, 2010 (China Knowledge) - Belarussian government spokesman Alexander Timoshenko said yesterday that Belarus could see Chinese investors spend over US$10 billion on a series of projects related to automobiles, electricity and sugar, according to sources.

The spokesman said the US$10 billion deal had been discussed during Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping's visit to Minsk.

The projects could be implemented in the next three to four years, according to Timoshenko.

He elaborated that Belarus aims to work with China on 89 projects, including construction of an automobile plant and a sugar refinery and the reconstruction of several electricity plants, and the creation of a Chinatown in Minsk.

China's central bank and its counterpart in Belarus today reportedly inked the first currency swap agreement between China and a non-neighboring country.
