EU's Ashton criticizes Belarus for oppressing opposition, breaching rights

BRUSSELS, March 30 (Itar-Tass) -- EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton has criticized Belarusian authorities for oppressing the opposition and breaching human rights.

She said that the European Union insisted on Belarus' solution of problems in democracy and human rights and freedoms and noted that further cooperation would depend on practical steps of Minsk towards democracy, supremacy of law and human rights and freedoms.

Ashton strongly condemned the execution of two convicts in Belarus this March and said it was a distressful sign ahead of the April 25 local elections. She called for the immediate death penalty moratorium in Belarus.
