Purim in Belarus’ Capital

MINSK, Belarus – A large crowd participated in the Purim celebrations in Belarus’ capital city of Minsk, many of whom celebrated the holiday for the first time. Many of those in attendance were children in the local kindergarten and Ohr Avner Chabad Day School and their families.

The festivities were organized by Chief Rabbi of Minsk Shneur Deutsch, who is also a Chabad-Lubavitch emissary serving in this former Soviet republic. The event began with Rabbi Deutsch explaining to those gathered the message of the Megillah and its relevance to our lives today. After these words of introduction, the Megillah was read.

The Purim celebration was also attended by Israel Consul in Minsk Asaf Bracha and Shlomo Malinkin, the director of the Association of Jewish Communities of Belarus, as well as JDC Representative in Belarus Yoni Leifer.

Participants enjoyed a communal meal, aptly called “A Meal Fit for a King.” Each guest received a beautiful “mishloach manot” food gift. The Minsk-based Shalom Ensemble entertained the guests.
