Venezuela and Belarus to forge stronger ties

CARACAS, Venezuela

The presidents of Belarus and Venezuela plan to sign agreements to boost commercial, energy, industrial cooperation.

Hugo Chavez and Alexander Lukashenko have become close allies who share similarly hostile stances toward Washington.

Under their leadership, Venezuela and Belarus have already signed an agreement for military cooperation and a deal to establish a joint oil-producing venture in the South American nation's petroleum-rich Orinoco region.

Chavez and Lukashenko are scheduled to meet on Monday to discuss further cooperation.

Lukashenko last visited Venezuela in 2007, when Chavez dismissed accusations by U.S. and European critics that the leader of the former Soviet republic is a dictator.
