Foreigner found dead had taken drugs: Cops

PANAJI: The 28-year-old woman from Belarus, Olga Babich, whose body was found floating in a creek at Fernandes Vaddo at Siolim on Tuesday afternoon, was seen consuming drugs with her Russian 'boyfriend' and a male Russian friend in her apartment on Monday night.

"Investigations have revealed that the woman along with two male friends was seen taking ketamine in her room on Monday night. They had injected the drug using a syringe," Anjuna police sources investigating into the death said.

Babich, who was staying in a rented apartment for the last five months with her boyfriend, was found dead on Tuesday afternoon a few hours after her boyfriend Michael Chikin was admitted to Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) on Tuesday morning following a drug overdose. Police are now trying to trace the friend who had consumed ketamine with the couple.

Police have registered a case of unnatural death and said they are looking into all aspects of the case. "Prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide but we are waiting for the postmortem report, before we arrive at any decision," police said. The postmortem couldn't be conducted on Wednesday as the GMC forensic doctor asked police to get permission from either the embassy or the girl's family to conduct the postmortem.

According to police, under the influence of the drug, the three started shouting and dancing in the apartment late Monday night due to which other guests were disturbed and the apartment watchman called the police.

"When we reached the apartment we found the couple behaving in a strange manner, while their friend had a trishul in his hand and was shouting loudly, 'I am the lord'," police sources said.

A staff member present in the apartment on Monday night said, "As they were creating a nuisance the police were called. Once the police arrived, they managed to send the person with the trishul to his room, which is also in the apartment. On Tuesday morning, he met the apartment owner before going to his coffee shop in Arambol."

A watchman working at the apartment said he saw Babich on Tuesday morning going towards the back of the apartment, which is towards the river at about 6am. Her body was found floating in the creek at about 2.40pm.

Babich's 28-year-old boyfriend, in his statement to the police, said that when he woke up at about 6am, he found that Babich was not in the room and as she hadn't returned till about 10am, he tried to end his life by smashing a bottle on his head, police sources said. Police added that he had even told the doctor at Asilo hospital that he had consumed ketamine and the injuries were self-inflicted.
