Belarusian woman's Russian boyfriend held

PANAJI: Anjuna police have arrested the Russian boyfriend of 28-year-old woman from Belarus, Olga Babich, whose body was found floating in a creek at Fernandes Vaddo at Siolim on Tuesday afternoon, for attempting to commit suicide.

Police registered a case of attempt to commit suicide against Michael Chikin and arrested him after the doctor treating him at Goa medical college and hospital in his report said that Michael had attempted to commit suicide. "He was arrested and later sent to judicial custody," said police sources.

Also Michael in his confession to the special judicial magistrate said that he had tried to end his life by smashing a bottle on his head as he thought that Olga had left him, said police sources. "In his statement to the SJM, Michael said that in the last few weeks there were constant fights between Olga and him. On Monday night, both of them consumed ketamine and after few hours he realised that Olga was not in the room. He also said that he felt that Olga had left him and as he couldn't leave without her, he tried to commit suicide by smashing a bottle on his head," said sources.

Meanwhile, post-mortem was conducted on Babich, who was staying in a rented apartment for the last five months with her boyfriend, at GMC. She was found dead on Tuesday afternoon a few hours after her boyfriend Chikin was admitted to GMC on Tuesday morning following a drug overdose.

A watchman working at the apartment said he saw Babich on Tuesday morning going towards the back of the apartment, which is towards the river at about 6am. Her body was found floating in the creek at about 2.40pm. Babich was staying in a rented apartment since last 5 months with her boyfriend.

"The postmortem report has revealed that a greenish jelly type substance was found in her stomach but it couldn't be confirmed what this substance was. Her viscera has been preserved for chemical examination to determine if she had consumed any drugs," said police sources. Police have registered a case of unnatural death.

The police have been informed by the Belarus embassy that they have got in touch with the victim's mother and she would decide in a day or two about whether she would take her body back to Belarus or conduct funeral in Goa. "Till then the body will be kept in the morgue," added sources.
