Russia, Belarus sign agreement on cooperation in building nuclear power plant

MINSK, March 15 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian Rosatom Director General Sergei Kiriyenko and Belarusian Energy Minister Alexander Ozerets signed an agreement on cooperation in building the Belarusian nuclear power plant on Tuesday, in the presence of Prime Ministers Vladimir Putin and Mikhail Myasnikovich.

The latter said that the nuclear power plant would strengthen the Belarusian energy system and lay down a technological foundation of the common electricity market of Belarus and Russia, which might be joined by Kazakhstan later on.

Kiriyenko said they had coordinated terms of a loan to Belarus for building the nuclear power plant.

The first unit of the NPP will be commissioned in 2017. Russia’s Atomstroyexport will be the general contractor of the plant to be built in the Grodno
